Translated as ‘divine seeing’, Visio Divina is a form of prayer in which the focal point is visual. It is similar to Lectio Divina where the focus is a piece of text, usually scriptural. In Christian tradition, and particularly in the Orthodox Church, icons were considered to be visual texts for those who could not read. Icon simply means image, but Christian icons often depicted images of saints or biblical and traditional stories. They were used for teaching and in the liturgy of a church service, and icon-gazing was a contemplative practice.
We will engage in the contemplative practice of icon-gazing, using some modern icons made by Marcy Hall. Led by the Rev. Margaret Somerville, there will be time for silent reflection and for sharing the ways in which the images reveal to us our connection with the divine.
